Davis Cup's article

Haas keeps his focus against ailing Ancic

If Tommy Haas has been building up a reputation as someone who never quite produces his best tennis in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, he did his best to quell that in a highly impressive 26 64 64 64 victory over Mario Ancic that gives Germany a 1-0 lead over Croatia here in Krefeld.

With the pressure on Haas to win, given that he is Germany’s only top ten player while the visitors have two in Ancic and Ivan Ljubicic, the German came back from an inauspicious start to play some great tennis and exploit to the full one of Ancic’s less good days. The ninth-ranked Croat later revealed he had been in bed for the last three days, taking antibiotics and vitamins to battle a cold and temperature, which he said explained his deterioration after the first set.

Yet despite Ancic’s ailment, in many ways the key was that Haas, who can get so hard on himself and so angry during matches, kept calm throughout the three hours and four minutes of play. “It’s funny,” he said, “people keep reminding me that when I’m focused and don’t yell or scream then something is wrong with me, but I was really focused. It’s always something totally different and special to play Davis Cup, you have so many people rooting for you, you have a coach on the bench to calm me down, so I just tried to stay focused, stick to my gameplan and it worked very well for me today.”

Haas makes slow start

The first set was something of a game of chess, Haas getting the better of the baseline exchanges, while Ancic was timing his net approaches better. Ancic saved a break point in the opening game, and then broke in the second as Haas struggled to get his tactics right. Ancic broke a second time on a patiently constructed point to take the set in 38 minutes.

Yet he wasn’t serving well, and there were plenty of indications that Haas had ample potential to get back into the match. And when the German broke in the opening game of the second, he took control. Haas dropped just four points on his serve in the second set, and broke in the first game of the third. Ancic’s best chance to get back came in the sixth game when he had Haas at 0-40, only to see the German win five points on the run. Ancic had two more break points in the eighth game, but that proved his last chance, and the racket thrown in anger by the Croat testified to the way he was losing the thread of the match.

With a break for 3-1 in the fourth, Haas looked to be cruising, but Ancic still managed to save a match point on his own serve at 3-5, before Haas wrapped up the victory on a fluent down-the-line backhand that left Ancic stranded.

I’m a team player,” said Ancic when asked whether he would be fit for Saturday’s doubles, in which he is set to play a vital role, “and I hope I’ll be better, but we’ll have to see. I’ve spent most of the last three days in bed, so I have to be happy that I played as well as I did.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope Mario will play tomorrow and he will be better.

are you happy Masha?

More than I can say! w00t.gif He made my day, my night, my everything with this win! I love him! hug.gif

Mario, OMG, not again! Why is it always smth bad with him right before the DC? And Ivo is out again when they again need him! I hate this situation! censored.gif

I only hope Mario won't do anything that may damage his health! We need him healthy!
But for real they don't have a lot of chances in the doubles tomorrow without him though Lovro is pretty good double player unsure.gif

Anyway Mario get better soon and do what is better for you console.gif

Well, you never know! If you think like that, than they didn't have to play doubles match at all because Mario lost the first match so than they had no chances anymore. Or at least they didn't have to torture poor Mario, Lovro could play that match with Ivan. Why not try to think optimistic? I don't see a reason why Ljubo couldn't beat Haas, if he will play HIS game and if he plays a great match everything can happen. And Mario - he is well known as a big fighter.... You think that illness will stop him? If he will have to save the last point, I'm sure he will give everything he can! Davis Cup means a lot to him and he will not give up that easily! I'm sure about that!
I have to be optimistic, otherwise it is to difficult for me.... And we never give up! NEVER! thumbsup2.gif

GOOD LUCK, GUYS! I KNOW THEY CAN DO IT!!!! rock.gif

Hi, this article said that MARIO is not in the Croatian team, but yesterday, in other croat-article said that MARIO is begining to practice, who knows??, I hope Mario will be prudent smile.gif

Ancic and Karlovic miss Cup clash

Mario Ancic and Ivo Karlovic have not been included in Croatia's squad to face Great Britain in the Davis Cup World Group qualifier at Wimbledon.
Ancic has a shoulder injury while big-serving Karlovic has not played for his country since 2005 because of a dispute with his federation.

Ivan Ljubicic leads the squad, which also includes Marin Cilic, Roko Karanusic and Lovro Zovko.

Teams can change two players before the tie, which begins on 21 September.

The absence of Ancic and Karlovic will boost Britain's hopes of qualifying for the World Group, which features the top 16 countries.

Ljubicic, currently ranked 12th, is a former world number three, but he has never got past the third round at Wimbledon and has gone out in the first round on four occasions.

Cilic, 19, is a rising star, ranked 119th in the world. He beat British number two Tim Henman in the first round at Queen's this year on his way to the quarter-finals.

The tie, to be played on Wimbledon's Court One, will be Henman's last competitive appearance before he retires.

Andy Murray, Jamie Murray and Jamie Baker make up the rest of captain John Lloyd's squad.

Hi there - I don't have my dictionary here right now, but "oprostiti" means to be sorry. So I guess Prpic is sorry that our Maio could not play u Londonu (in London.)

My goal in life now is to make sure that Mario gets healthy and can play next year!

Hooray to Cilic - with Ljubicic unable to play, and now leaving the Davis Cup team, we need Marin Cilic and we need a HEALTHY MARIO ANCIC!!!! kiss1.gif
